Strong earthquake in southwestern Pakistan kills at least 20 people

At least one coal mine and dozens of mud houses in southwestern Pakistan were destroyed in a major earthquake early Thursday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 200, officials said.


Local deputy commissioner Suhail Anwar Shaheen said the death toll was expected to increase as the crew searched remote mountainous areas.

Citing coal mine workers in the area, Shaheen said at least four people were killed when the mines they worked for collapsed. As many as 100 houses collapsed, and the sleeping inhabitants were buried inside.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the magnitude 5.9 earthquake was about 15 km (9 miles) northeast of Harnai, Baluchistan. The first measurement of seismic intensity was 5.7 magnitude. It struck about 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) below the surface of the earth. Most of the population in the area lives in tanned mud houses, many of which have collapsed. Rescue operations were underway, but Shaheen said it would take hours to reach many of the most devastated areas.

Witnesses in the area said the inhabitants were wrapped in blankets against the cold, sitting by the side of the road waiting for aftershocks to subside and help to arrive.

The area is remote and the temperatures on autumn nights are already chilly.

According to the state’s disaster management authorities, Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan is located in a seismically active region. The worst earthquake of 1935 destroyed the capital of Baluchistan and killed more than 35,000 people. Since then, it has been Pakistan’s least populated state, with a population of only 12 million and dozens of earthquakes.

Pakistan is a country of 220 million people, 60 percent of whom live in the eastern part of the country, Punjab.
