Thursday’s Jersey City rally honored and remembered the victims of the 2019 anti-Semitic shooting at a local kosher market

Jersey City, NJ (WABC) — A rally was held Thursday night in Jersey City to commemorate the victims of the 2019 anti-Semitic shootings.

New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy delivered a speech as elected officials gathered at city hall and vowed to continue fighting hate.

A tragic and fatal incident occurred at a local kosher grocery store almost three years ago.

investigator says Two gunmen killed 13-year veteran detective Joseph ShieldsThey then targeted a Jewish deli and killed three people inside the store, including 24-year-old Moshe Deutsch, 49-year-old Douglas Miguel Rodriguez, and 31-year-old Mindy Ferencz.

Investigators then determined that the two had killed the fifth victim. That person was Michael Rumberger, an Uber driver.

Police shot and killed two suspects.

Anyone who saw that scene that night or the next day will never forget how awful it was.

The attack was as horrifying as it was three years ago, but it was not an isolated event. In fact, experts say it was just a drop of their hatred.

In early 2020, officials said they had evidence that: Suspect had been planning the attack for months.

The suspect allegedly checked out the JC Kosher Market on Martin Luther King Drive at least twice and entered the store on one of those occasions.

Scott Richman leads anti-defamation leagues in New York and New Jersey. There, 2019 was the worst year ever for anti-Semitic hate crimes, and 2021 was just getting worse. This year is now on pace to beat that record.
