NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) — After two years, a dog is finally leaving a Newark animal shelter, but has not yet been adopted.
Six-year-old Red has spent a third of his life behind the kennel door at Associated Humane Societies Newark Branch (AHS). On October 30th, AHS posted a petition on Facebook asking for help finding a home for Red.
In a post, AHS Newark described Red as “once a mischievous, active, and energetic dog,” but now as “melancholy and depressed.”
Red will be moving from AHS Newark to Heart and Soul Dog Rescue in Lyndhurst. The rescue group plans to help Red get adopted.
“Our staff and volunteers know it, but the world doesn’t seem to understand that Red is an amazing dog,” AHS Newark posted on its Facebook page. “Two years is an unreasonably long time for a good child like Red to be in a shelter, and it shows.”
They say they have several interested candidates and hope to find a place at Red in time for the holidays. Heart and Soul Dog Rescue founder Jackie Wienclaw said Red had recently had a problem and had to be spayed and neutered.
The group plans to train Red, who was originally a stray. They say they received a good application and will likely go through a foster-to-adopt process to ensure Red is matched with a good home.
“Although Red was rescued, we have many other dogs who have been here for over a year and are highly adoptable,” AHS Newark said.
