The first black driver to win a NASCAR race since Wendell Scott

Darrell Wallace became the second black driver to win the NASCAR Cup Series race on Monday, winning the Talladega Superspeedway with a shorter rainy Yarrawood 500.

Wallace took the lead in the second half of Stage 2 and came forward when attention flew with seven laps remaining. Shortly thereafter it rained and the field was sent to the pit road.

The race, which had already passed the midpoint, was officially decided 45 minutes later. Authorities tried to dry the truck, but the truck was lost again and another cell forced the jet dryer back into the garage.

Wallace became the first black driver to win a Cup Series race since 1963. Wendell Scott won the Jackson Building 200.

Prior to the Cork Zero Sugar 400 in Daytona on August 28, NASCAR presented Scott’s family with a 1963 victory trophy. This is because the back baker dominated the winner of the day.

Later, it was discovered that Scott actually won the race two laps earlier at the end of lap 200, and the race went two more laps before Baker was mistakenly declared the winner.
