A lottery ticket sold in California matched five numbers in the Powerball — but missed the $850 million jackpot by just one number, state officials said.

The lucky ticket, which was only missing the Powerball, was sold at a Quik Stop in San Jose, lottery officials said in a Sept. 27 post on Facebook.

Those five numbers were worth a prize of $796,425, officials said.

Because no one won the jackpot, it grew to $925 million — which players will have the chance to win in the Saturday, Sept. 30 drawing, officials said.

In July, a lottery player from California scored one of the largest Powerball jackpots ever by winning $1.08 billion, McClatchy News previously reported.

The month before, a player won a $1,036,009 in the Powerball but came up short of the $262 million jackpot when they missed the red Powerball, McClatchy News reported.

In April, another player was one number away from the $26 million Mega Millions jackpot — though they still took home $178,032, McClatchy News reported.

San Jose is about 50 miles southeast of San Francisco.

What to know about Powerball

To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets cost $2 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
