Crime in New York City: Color driver stabbed to death in attempted robbery at FDR Drive in Manhattan.suspect in custody
Manhattan, New York (WABC) — A man has been taken into custody after an attempted robbery took place at FDR Drive on Tuesday and police said he stabbed a livery driver.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. on the southbound side of FDR Drive near the exit of the Manhattan Bridge as police were responding to a robbery.
Witnesses to the car that was rear-ended by a black Tesla told Eyewitness News reporter Sefaan Kim that the driver was stabbed and the suspect tried to flee the scene in an FDR drive by jumping into a white sedan. .
“The driver was chasing the man who had been stabbed, and the man who had been stabbed and stabbed,” said eyewitness Yuliya Billbreyer. “Then the man who stabbed him jumped in another car and started wrestling with another driver. So I scared him a little bit and ran down the highway and jumped off.”
Exclusive footage obtained by Eyewitness News shows the brutal scene after the stabbing.
One of the drivers, a construction worker in a neon yellow shirt, was seen in the vehicle that was rear-ended by the Tesla. He said the suspect was hitchhiking at first and then tried to carjack another driver.
“He started getting into someone else’s car, but he couldn’t really get into someone else’s car,” said eyewitness Sergio Varbobates. “Then he got into a fight with the driver who was trying to hijack the car, so when I came, I tried to scare him away.”
The suspect was seen walking on the FDR and at one point jumping out the back window into the white vehicle.
The driver quickly stopped, and the suspect got out of the vehicle, walked to a shelf, and threw the black bag down.
The video shows the suspect hanging from a ledge before falling onto a bike path several stories below the FDR.
He broke both legs and was taken into custody. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
Police believe the suspect stabbed the livery driver several times in an attempted robbery and then quickly veered off course.
Mariano Velez said she was waiting for help with the bloodied driver.
“I saw there was a fight. Then I saw the man come back to the car. It was the Tesla that crashed. I tried to grab his back and he tried to run away,” Velez said.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.
A witness who was rear-ended by an Uber suffered whiplash and the car’s rear bumper was smashed.
It’s still unclear why the suspect was walking FDR Drive in the first place.
Investigation is ongoing.
