The skeletal body found in 1974 was identified as a missing teenager

West Palm Beach, Florida — Nearly 50 years later, a Florida detective announced that in 1974 he had identified a teenage girl whose skeletal debris was found tied to a tree.

Detective Bill Springer of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Susan Poole, born in 1957, may have been the victim of a serial killer.

The remains of the pool were found in June 1974 in a mangrove in the area known as the “Burnt Bridge”. According to Springer, the pool disappeared two years ago, just before Christmas 1972.

“No one knew where she went,” Springer said. “Her clothes, her notebook were still in the apartment she was staying in.”

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has identified a skeletal relic found in 1974.

In late 2021, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office sent an unidentified body to Othram, a Texas-based forensic DNA lab that uses family trees to create DNA profiles.

The lab identified the deceased as a pool and helped investigators find her parents and siblings. Her family lived in a trailer park in Broward County when the pool disappeared.

“The family was happy to know what happened. I’ve been waiting for a long time to see what happened to their sister,” Springer said.

According to Springer, Poole may have been the victim of a serial killer, Gerald Schaefer, a former Wilton Manners police officer and Martin County adjutant convicted of killing two girls in 1973. There is.

“Gerald Schaefer is the most suspicious person because of the fact that she was in the mangrove and that she was tied to the mangrove. He was active at the time,” Springer said.

Schaefer, who said investigators had preyed on a young girl hitchhiking, was stabbed to death by a fellow prisoner in Florida prison in the mid-’90s.

Springer said Thursday that Osram’s genealogy technology is “excellent research technology” and the sheriff’s office wants to use it in other open cases.

The sheriff’s office wants to find and talk to three of Pool’s friends (Julie Hunt, Michelle Williamson, and Greg Anderson) to find out what happened to her.

Anyone with information that can help the investigator will be asked to call the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
