Tropical Cyclone Elsa Soaks New York As It Runs Through The East Coast

Albany, NY (AP)

A fast-moving tropical cyclone, Elsa, struck the New England area on Friday with heavy rains and strong winds, knocking down trees and disrupting rail services on its way to New England.

Maximum sustained winds from storms peaked near 50 mph (85 km) as they passed through New York City and Long Island, the National Hurricane Center said in an 8 am update.

The center reported that wind speeds had dropped to 78 mph (126 km) from overnight measurements that appeared to be “related to a nearby tornado” along the coast of New Jersey.

There were several obstacles to the commuter train on Friday, with a slight delay on the Harlem line north of the city, and a fallen tree that stopped service at the Oyster Bay branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The storm struck a city already upset by the flood on Thursday, which flooded roads and at least one subway station.

It could rain up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) in some areas on Friday, enough to cause flash floods. Tornadoes can occur early on Friday afternoon in parts of Long Island and southeastern New England, according to the Hurricane Center.

The strongest winds were expected to stay off New England. However, the storm was expected to bring heavy rainfall of up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) on the coast of Maine before blowing into the Bay of Fundy and Canada late Friday.

It rained heavily in New York City by the morning.

The system had already been accused of killing one person in Florida on Wednesday. Elsa also previously caused a damaging tornado in Georgia.

A tropical cyclone warning spread along part of the East Coast from New Jersey to Massachusetts on Friday morning. According to forecasters, Elsa was moving northeast at 31 mph (50 km).

Elsa is expected to reach a tropical depression by Friday night.

Nine people were injured when a tornado struck a campsite on Wednesday for active military personnel and military retirees on the coast of Camden County, Georgia. Eight of these injured had to be taken to hospital, according to Chris Tucker, a spokesman for the Kingsbay Naval Submarine Base.

The National Weather Service said in a preliminary report early Thursday after employees investigated the damage that an EF-2 tornado overturned multiple RVs and capsized one of the vehicles on a lake about 200 feet (61 meters). Said he threw it into.

Officials in Jacksonville, Florida said one person died when a tree fell and collided with two cars on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Navy’s Air Force Atlantic Office said Thursday that sailors assigned to Jacksonville patrol and reconnaissance squadron 16 had been killed.

In South Carolina, a crew member of the Coast Guard airbase Savannah rescued a family stranded on Otter Island on Wednesday after a boat drifted off the beach. According to a Coast Guard news release, the group was taken to the hospital in good health.

The National Weather Service in Morehead City, North Carolina, tweeted that a tornado was found near Fairfield on Thursday afternoon.

According to the website poweroutages.us, power outages scattered along the Elsa route were reported on Friday morning, leaving about 24,000 homes and businesses from Delaware to Massachusetts losing electricity.

Brian McNordi, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, said Elsa was the earliest fifth-named storm on record.
