Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders called for an investigation Thursday after the New York Times reported that the Justice Department had seized communications data from members of the House Intelligence Committee under President Donald Trump.
“The news about the politicization of the Trump administration’s Justice Ministry is disastrous,” D-Calif’s Pelosi said in a statement. “These actions were an even worse attack on our democracy by the former president. It seems.”
The Times reported Thursday that the Justice Department summoned data from at least two committee members, aides and family members to Apple in 2017 and 2018.
Among those whose records were confiscated were Adam Schiff, a California State Assembly member who was then the Commission’s top Democrat.
Schiff, who is currently chairing the panel, said in a statement Thursday night: A case suggesting the weaponization of law enforcement by a corrupt president. “
The Times reported that a subpoena had arrived when the Justice Department was trying to locate the source of the leak that led to a news article about Mr. Trump’s contact with Russia.
