Brooklyn, NY (WABC) — Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Brooklyn on Thursday to promote the Biden administration’s investments in underserved communities, financial institutions and small businesses.
She traveled with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge to tour the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation Economic Solutions Center.
Blondel Pinnock, president and CEO of The Restoration Corporation, led multiple tour stops at the Restoration Plaza on Fulton Street.
Harris spoke with Lorraine West of Lorraine West Jewelry. He explained that he is trying to get the business off the ground and grow beyond being an individual entrepreneur into a business.
Our second stop was Julian Stillman and Omolara Adelkan, who spoke on the financial side of small businesses.
Stillman began talking about bridging the racial wealth gap, saying that being a Brown immigrant from the LGBTQI community, he’s also committed to the full inclusion of all.
Adelekan is a Nigerian immigrant and client of Stillman, helping her credit score, saving for school, paying off debt and working on buying a home.
She talked about how the program meets everyone’s needs.
Adelkan said Stillman helped him understand how to use a credit card correctly, and Harris joked, “I think there are a lot of people in this room who need to learn it.” ’ he joked.
A third stop was dance instructor Karen Thornton-Daniels and her student, Aomi Sailing, in her search for college and the need for other young leaders to participate in programs such as these that encourage leadership and mentorship. We talked about a reason.
She described her leadership in high school, practicing interpersonal skills, and how it ties in with her education.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams joined Harris and Fudge in their remarks.
They were then expected to announce tens of billions of dollars in investments in underserved communities from a coalition of 23 companies and foundations.
The Harrises then travel to the Hamptons’ Water Mill for a late night fundraiser.
She plans to return to Washington, D.C. around 8:00 p.m.
