What to Consider When Choosing a Home Security Provider

Nowadays, there are more options than ever when it comes to choosing a home security provider.  With the advent of smart, intuitive devices like Nest and Dropcam, consumers now have the opportunity to choose between multiple communication methods (mobile apps, web interfaces, etc.).  Here are some things you should consider when choosing a home security provider.

Cost

One of the most important considerations when choosing a home security provider is cost. There are a lot of different packages available from many different providers. The first step should be to determine how much security you need and then come up with a budget that reflects that amount.  Generally, the more components your system includes (motion detectors, glass break sensors, etc.), the higher the price will be.

It’s also important to note that most, if not all, of your monthly fees, will go towards maintaining the system you have.  For example, some providers charge a monthly fee to include cloud storage. Depending on how much you are willing to pay for this service, it can be beneficial or detrimental to your wallet.

Services Provided

Different providers offer different services. It’s important to determine what you need before choosing a provider. The most common services include:

  • Professional monitoring – including intrusion, fire, and carbon monoxide detection
  • Video surveillance
  • Home automation/automated locks
  • Mobile notifications

If you’re going on a trip or will be away from your house for a while and won’t be able to monitor it yourself, professional monitoring may be necessary. Companies like ADT Home Security offer this with every package, but it is usually something that is sold at a premium price or that comes with more expensive systems.

If you don’t want to invest in a camera system and just need access to your cameras outside the house, video surveillance may do the trick.  However, if you want full control of everything from your mobile device or voice control device (i.e. Amazon Echo), look for a provider with higher-end home automation capabilities or a DIY home security system like Google’s Nest.

Multiple Devices

Many providers offer different devices in their packages, but not all of them are compatible with each other. For example, Nest is an extremely popular smart device that works well with Dropcam, but when it comes to home security, they may not work together properly if a different company provides the cameras and you have your home automation setup with Nest.

In this case, it’s crucial to know what devices are compatible with each other before choosing a provider.  When doing so, be sure to check compatibility between software and hardware components. For example, one provider may offer a great camera that pairs really well with a camera app, but not with the internet infrastructure you have.

People/Customization

The main reason many people choose a DIY home security system is for its customizability and easy-to-use interface. For example, Google’s Nest has other connectivity features that other providers don’t offer which makes it an attractive option to those wanting multiple smart devices. If customization is important to you, then it is certainly best to invest in one of these systems, but keep in mind that you will have to set it up yourself.

Homeownership

If you are not a homeowner, there are some companies that cannot provide service to you because they require extensive professional installation that only homeowners are qualified for. For example, companies like Vivint and ADT offer great products but require installation in a home that can be locked down to ensure it won’t be tampered with.

In these cases, you’re better off going with a company that offers professional monitoring services without the need for professional installation.  This way you can still have a well-recommended system installed in your house by a friend or family member.

These are some of the main things you should consider when choosing a home security provider.  If you’re still unsure about which company to go with, don’t be afraid to ask for advice from friends and family members or look online to find one that suits all of your needs.
