Charity plans to set up 20 ‘small free and diverse libraries’ around Duval County

jacksonville, florida – A Jacksonville charity is giving people access to books at mobile libraries called “Little Free Diverse Libraries” located throughout Duval County.

The first is located south of the I-10 flyover on King Street near Roosevelt Boulevard in the Riverside District.

19 more have been added across the county and people can submit ideas for where they should be placed. books@904ward.org.

There are at least 30 books inside each library painted by local artists.

Kimberly Allen, CEO of 904Ward, a charity dedicated to ending racism and building relationships, has set out to speak for the stories of people in this community.

This is because schools are reviewing books in response to new state laws, and some educators are “out of caution” removing all books from classroom and library shelves.

“Communities have places people can go, fiction and non-fiction about people in marginalized communities, by adults and young people, authors of color, people from the LGBTQ+ community, and people who have lived their lives. You have access to the books of a lot of times margin,” Allen said.

This first library is dedicated to the late Bryant Rollins, a journalist and author who fought for social and racial justice, especially during the civil rights movement.

His widow, Shirley Stetson, is honored with this first library named after her late husband.

“The whole world is grappling with the question of how we can reconcile with each other. ‘ said Stetson.

Hope McMath runs the Yellow House Art Gallery, a space for socially conscious art. McMath calls her book “Bridge Builder.”

“We seek to provide regular access to information, knowledge, free expression and creativity for children and adults in our community,” said McMath.

They say this is how change is created.
