What is aphasia?Bruce Willis suffers from language loss and sheds light on many causes of disability

Chicago-It’s easy to think that Bruce Willis is indestructible. So, after all, it’s the image that movie stars have cultivated on the big screen over the years.

So it was a shock to many when Willis’ ex-wife Demi Moore went to Instagram on behalf of the whole family and announced that she was suffering from a loss of language function known as aphasia.

“This is a speech disorder or loss of language. People with aphasia have difficulty communicating verbally,” explained Michelle Armor, program chief clinician at Marian Joy’s Center for Northwestern Medical Aphasia. ..

“You lose your ability to read, you can lose your ability to understand spoken language, and you can lose your ability to write and speak,” said Dr. Michael Chen, a professor of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center.

Strokes, tumors, head injuries, or other damage to the language center of the brain can cause aphasia. Brain infections and Alzheimer’s disease can cause it. The National Aphasia Association estimates that 2 million Americans are affected and nearly 180,000 suffer from this disorder each year.

“No matter what, it has a devastating effect on a person’s life,” Armor said. “The lack of communication can affect our social and personal relationships with our families.”

According to doctors, aphasia is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and can vary in severity.

“It’s common to have aphasia after a stroke. It’s one of the most common forms of brain disease, but it’s actually all kinds of brain disease. When it affects the language network of the brain, it’s aphasia. “Can cause,” said Dr. Joseph Cooper. Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at UIC.
However, aphasia affects a person’s ability to process language, but it does not affect their intellect. Researchers say that treatment may be able to enhance other talents.

Borna Bonakdarpour, an assistant professor of neurology at Northwestern University, said:

Some people improve dramatically in a few months. Others may need to find other ways of communicating. Speech therapy is useful, but all treatments are completely dependent on the cause of aphasia.

Bonakdarpour reminded people affected by aphasia that they have and hope for a cure, even if it doesn’t yet exist.

“Even in the midst of all the negative aspects of the state, we will find joy,” he said.

Both experts who have worked on treating, connecting, and ultimately healing aphasia patients have stated that the Willis family statement is key to their work.

“The more people who know it, the more support everyone with aphasia can get, which is very important,” Armor said.

Details of what brought Willis’s condition were not disclosed.

In a statement on social media, Moore said: “Live it” and together we are planning to do just that. “
