Nearly 100 evacuated as homeless camp fire breaks out in underground Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan (WABC) — At least 100 people were evacuated after a fire broke out in a homeless underground camp in Hell’s Kitchen Saturday night.

The camp was three stories below a homeless shelter that had been converted into a hotel, 25 feet above the Amtrak Empire Line tracks.

Two people were hospitalized and three firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters had to work with Amtrak to prevent the train from passing and power to the tracks from being lost. They then struggled to reach the underground location with a hose.
