Why the 2022 Grand National will be a very special sporting occasion

Cast your mind back to 2020, and the disappointment that rippled through the horse racing community when it was announced that, for the first time since the Second World War, the Grand National would not be taking place.

This was amidst the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic when fear and uncertainty gripped the nation, and the idea of staging an event of the Grand National’s scale was simply unthinkable.

A year later, the race was staged behind closed doors for the first time in its history, meaning there was no roaring crowd to serenade Minella Times and Rachael Blackmore as they surged to victory. It was strange for the event to be held without a crowd present, but at least we got to watch on our televisions instead of making do with no race at all.

Now, as April approaches once again, attention is turning to the 2022 edition of the race — one that promises to be a hugely exciting spectacle. As racing fans gear up to bet on horse racing exchange, let’s have look at a few reasons why this year’s Grand National will be an occasion to savour.

The return of fans

As the muted cheers of staff and horse connections echoed around Aintree racecourse last year to greet Minella Times’ victory, there was a sad sense that Blackmore and trainer Henry de Bromhead were missing out on the true Grand National winning experience. Usually, the crowd would be in raptures celebrating the climax of the race.

Fortunately, we will get to experience the Grand National this year as it’s meant to be. The stands at Aintree will be packed to the rafters, and the roar as the horses thunder up the home straight will be defeating. It’ll be great to see spectators milling about the place, dressed to the nines as is tradition for horse racing’s biggest occasions.

Celebratory atmosphere

Indeed, there will be a special kind of party atmosphere marinading proceedings at the Grand National Festival, simply due to the fact that live racing has been restored to its former glory. Times were tough during the pandemic when fixtures were being held behind closed doors, but thankfully we are in a position to celebrate what looks to be a return to normality.

For those in attendance, the Grand National will be particularly special to witness this year, and you can expect plenty of smiling faces throughout the venue.

An unpredictable race

Of course, the best thing about the Grand National is its unpredictability, and this year’s race looks as difficult to call as ever. The current bookies’ favourite is Snow Leopardess, trained by Charlie Longsdon, but the likes of Any Second Now, Burrows Saint and Enjoy D’allen will be eager to make their presence felt too.

The Grand National is just about the toughest jumps race a horse can be entered in, which is why it is so dramatic and entertaining to watch. Whoever wins, there are bound to be plenty of thrills and spills along the way, and when you factor in the buoyant Aintree crowd, it’s set to be a race to remember.
