Wife spending Thanksgiving with children while husband is in hospital

Many consider traveling during Thanksgiving holiday weeks, but some choose to spend their holidays alone.

Mothers like Erica Guerrero are forced to do that. Her husband is on a ventilator fighting for his life with the coronavirus, which is the first Thanksgiving of their 4-month-old daughter.

Erica keeps track of her family’s situation on a daily basis. She is grateful that her baby and their eldest daughter are healthy.

Her husband is in the hospital and she is forced to quarantine, but Erica’s family surrounds her through technology.

At the last Thanksgiving, Val and Erica Guerrero spent their vacation surrounded by love and family. This year, Val is in the hospital.

Erica worries about him and spends it caring for her baby.

“I never imagined we would experience this,” Erica said. “It’s really difficult.”

Erica tells us that love never left. She feels it when she video chats with her family and talks to her on social media. It was the only way she could talk to them for weeks and the only way she could see them on Thursday.

“Val still wanted us to do something, but I personally haven’t really done it,” Erica said. “I don’t think I’m going to stand up for anything if my husband isn’t with us.”

Dr. Laura Streyffeler, a qualified mental health counselor, will teach you how everyone away from your family should see it this holiday season. She says she takes the time to reach out to her loved ones and effectively connect with them

“Even if that’s not the best way, you can zoom in and do something with your family,” says Streyffeler. “It’s not the same, but it doesn’t have to be completely disconnected. This Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be all or zero.”

Streyffeler says it’s important to remember and appreciate what we have, as well as what frustrates us about the vacation pandemic. Experts believe that we will rely on technology for a short time to connect with our families.

Separation is difficult, but Erica told me that her family and colleagues are having Thanksgiving again this year. She can feel part of the celebration as they bring her dishes.

“The spirit of being together is still there,” Erica said. “It’s not happening physically.”
