Yelp is deploying new tools that make it easier for people to find and support Asian businesses during an increasing number of attacks on Asians and Pacific Islands people in the United States.
Business owners can decide whether to list “owned in Asia” as one of the attributes of their place of business. The new settings are in the Diversity Attributes section of the business page. Yelp also includes options for businesses owned by blacks, Latinos, or women.
The decision to opt in is entirely up to the business owner. Yelp is announcing new features in partnership with Gold House, a non-profit organization focused on the inclusiveness and representativeness of the people of the Asia-Pacific Islands.
“Last year, the search rate for Asian-owned businesses in the United States increased by 130% compared to the same period last year, raising interest from consumers looking to support Asian business owners on Yelp.” Yelp co-founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppelman said in a blog post. “Patriotizing Asian-owned businesses is a small step we can all take to drive meaningful change and create lasting impact.”
When a customer searches for an Asian company or visits a business page with a diversity tag selected, “Asian companies” will be displayed under the amenities, and whether dogs are allowed or not, dogs are allowed. This new feature will appear during an increasing number of racist cases targeting Asian Americans. This includes some officials calling the virus “Kun Influenza” (such as former President Donald Trump) and unprovoked attacks in major cities such as San Francisco and New. As a result, many Asian-American restaurant owners had to worry not only about their business surviving the pandemic, but also about the safety of their employees and their facilities.
People often visit Yelp to find the specific business they want to support, but it’s also the first stop to report a negative experience at a restaurant.
Last year, Yelp said it doubled its commitment to monitor pages for racist comments and warned users if a company was accused of racism.
“ Posted more than 450 alerts on business pages accused or targeted for racist behavior related to the Black Lives Matter movement between May 26th and September 30th. “It did,” the company said in October. “We have maintained 24-hour support over the past few months to maintain the trust and safety of our users and business owners.”
