New Brunswick, NJ (WABC) — Almost four months after a 7-year-old girl was stabbed more than a dozen times by her grandmother, her family hopes she will recover.
Sophia Almonte, 7, used to sing and dance, but has not spoken since being stabbed 15 times.
“She loved playing the piano,” Sofia’s father, Jose Almonte, told Eyewitness News in an exclusive interview. “She loved being around people. She’s the most loving, caring, appreciative girl I’ve ever seen. She’s amazing.”
of A disturbing incident that occurred on a cold February morning. Sophia and her sister used to stay at her grandmother’s house in the Bronx. However, on this special visit, a bloody tragedy occurred as the sun went down.
Police say her grandmother slit her throat and stabbed her vital organs with a kitchen knife. Miraculously, the freshman survived.
Sophia was in a coma for two months. Her doctors told her family that she would never speak or move again.
On Monday, Sofia was taken to Children’s Hospital in New Brunswick for long-term care. Much to her family’s delight, she was sitting in her wheelchair. They call it the new miracle.
“I had high hopes,” Almonte said. “We pray every second of every day.”
Ryker’s current grandmother is Jose Almonte’s mother, so he is torn between his loyalty to her and his devotion to his daughter. He visited her mother but did not inquire about her attack. It hurts too much.
“My mother is not a criminal. Something happened that day. It’s the devil. I don’t know. She was a loving grandmother,” he said.
So far Sofia has beaten expectations, but has a long way to go. She is breathing through a tube, eating, and no one recognizes her at this time.
The family started GoFundMe page for support.
“I don’t know when, but I know she will be Sofia again,” said Jose Almonte.
