Firefighters battle three large blazes across Nassau County

Brookville, Long Island (WABC) — On Easter Sunday, three fires erupted within hours across Nassau County.

Two houses and one flower shop were set ablaze and severely damaged.

In Brookville, two alarm fires destroyed the upper floors of a large home on Fruitledge Road Sunday afternoon.

The first alarm was called just before 2:00 p.m., followed by two alarms, prompting 150 firefighters from neighboring towns to rush to the scene. They said he was able to control the flames within 90 minutes, but the problem was that this was not the only fire.

In Levittown, another house at 423 Holmes Street caught fire. According to eyewitness news, there was some kind of explosion when firefighters tried to enter the house, forcing everyone to retreat and fight the blaze from outside.

The fire appears to have started in the basement. Two firefighters were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The house was completely destroyed.

Three fires in one afternoon proved especially taxing for volunteers rushing to protect these communities and help their neighbors.

Todd Cronin, First Assist Chief of the East Norwich Fire Company, said: “Everyone is calling for mutual aid to cover Sunday to put out all these fires.”

What made the Brookville fire difficult was the lack of hydrants. they are spaced apart. In fact, the firefighter had to run a hose at least 1,000 feet from the hydrant before he could start running water into the burning house.

The third fire was Jack and Rose’s Florist, which was completely destroyed by the flames.
