Charlotte County’s chief of emergency management clarified that there is always the possibility of prompting more evacuations.

“I want to be clear. If you are asked to evacuate, we strongly encourage you to evacuate, but we have no intention of pushing you out. And when a storm hits, the situation becomes very dangerous. My staff will be dragged out onto the road and will have nowhere to go until after that, so if they need help, they may not come for a while,” Plummel said.

As of late Monday afternoon, about 40,000 people living in the Red Zone have been ordered to evacuate.

Also, with Hurricane Ian approaching, Charlotte County Jail will be closing field visits from 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, with a re-evaluation on Friday, September 30. However, this will not affect home visitation during this period.
