Carbon monoxide scare sends 10 people to hospital, including 4 children, on Long Island

East Meadow, Long Island (WABC) — Ten people, including four children, were taken to hospital after a carbon monoxide scare hit Long Island.

The detector was activated just before 9:30 pm on Monday at a house on Buchanan Road in East Meadows.

Nassau County Fire Chief Peter Cheswick said the highest level of carbon monoxide in the home was 1,460 ppm.

“It’s very dangerous. Called Nassau County Hazardous Materials and he responded as well. We’ve turned off the gas to our homes and public works are underway,” Cheswick said.

Authorities have since lowered the readings to acceptable levels.

“If it was midnight and they didn’t have working detectors, this would have been a different story,” added Cheswick.

The cause is under investigation.
