Bodega employee shot dead in Upper East Side robbery.Police believe suspect robbed Bronx bodega
Upper East Side, Manhattan (WABC) — Late Friday night, an Upper East Side bodega employee was shot dead during a robbery.
Police said the shooter first walked into the Daona Deli on East 81st and Third Avenues around 11:30 p.m. and demanded money from an employee.
The gunman then shot the 67-year-old victim in the head. He was confirmed dead at the scene.
The shooter fled on a scooter south of Third Avenue, where police believed he turned up in the Bronx about 30 minutes later, where he held a Yaya Deli clerk at gunpoint. No one was hurt in the incident. The shooter, Melrose, fled from Avenue to 160th Street and is still on the run.
Authorities linked the suspects to both incidents because they wore a distinctive disguise of white Tyvek protective gear and a black mask.
United Bodegas of America is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to arrests in these cases.
At an Upper East Side bodega, the victim was remembered as a kind man devoted to his family.
“He was a very nice, homely person… I can’t express how wonderful he was… Always a hard worker,” said Angel Vieera, a friend of the victim.
