Inwood, Manhattan (WABC) — A family in Inwood is grieving after losing their mother, wife and grandmother the day after Christmas.
Valeria Ortega, 64, died while walking to a supermarket at 11:30 am on Monday.
Police are looking for two men who fled on a moped after they shot another person. The suspect was across Deichmann Street, directly opposite Ortega, when Ortega was crossing Via Vermiglia with a shopping basket.
Friends and family found her unsuccessful and comforted her grieving husband.
Vincent Garcia told EyeWitness News by phone that she was “Buenissima – a very good woman, a loving mother” and, as he puts it, “too generous and kind and little to her own good.” It won’t work.”
Bender Louis Senfleur heard at least three gunshots, saw her fall and quickly realized there was nothing he could do.
“She didn’t move and it was in her head that she was hit,” he said.
Ortega was shot once in the head.
Neighbor Raymund Sepulveda said: “There are a lot of people running around with guns, a lot of children. Anyone can have a gun. You have to be careful. It’s sad. Who’s that?” It could be my mother or my sister,” he said.
“The best thing I can tell her is to be careful when she walks,” he said.
Ortega has lived in the area for over 30 years. NYPD’s 34th District detectives are also investigating another shooting on nearby West 205th Street and whether it may be linked – it happened just 15 minutes later. The shooting victim was apparently targeted and shot inside his apartment. He is recovering as police continue to search for the moped men who fled the scene.
