As wet furniture piles up on sidewalks and the hum of post-disaster pumps and generators fills the air, we begin to think about the unforgiving nature of extreme weather that climate change has made more frequent, more intense and unpredictable. There were people too.

There were no direct reports of injuries, but the storm forced authorities to cancel all flights arriving at O’Hare and Midway airports, the FAA reported.

The National Weather Service tweeted a map this morning showing where experts suspected the tornado may have made landfall Wednesday night.

The map shows multiple tornadoes being tracked in parts of northeastern Illinois between 5pm and 7pm local time, some forming close to each other.

“Our team will be investigating the damage today to determine exactly where the tornado traced,” the NWS tweeted.

After several days of record heat and dryness, the southwestern United States is gearing up for another day of high-risk wildfires as temperatures hit triple digits on Thursday.
