DeSantis set ‘open carry’ goal with Florida legislature ahead of session
Governor Ron DeSantis Appears to have given the Florida legislature the go-ahead for approval open carry measure when it meets next week for the start of the 2023 Legislative Session; and gun rights groups He is pressing lawmakers to act.
Rep. Luis Valdez of Havana recorded to DeSantis on Thursday night that he said he supported the public display of firearms by Floridians, but DeSantis said lawmakers had passed the Unlicensed Carrying Bill in the House of Representatives. I don’t think there is any intention to fix it.
“Yes, of course,” DeSantis was heard to say when asked if it was an unauthorized carry bill. HB543 Most public places should be modified to allow people to carry and display firearms.
The exchange took place in Jacksonville, where DeSantis was promoting his book The Courage to Be Free.

“I don’t think they’ll do that,” DeSantis said of lawmakers giving gun rights groups what they want.
“But I absolutely do,” said DeSantis.
Valdes, executive director of the Florida chapter of Gun Owners of America, said his interactions with DeSantis have helped the open carry movement.
Florida issues licenses to residents to carry concealed weapons in most public places. HB543 Rep. Charles Brannan R-Macclenney scraps longstanding requirements for secret weapons licenses that include fees, criminal background checks and completion of firearms training courses.

But the bill has come under fire from both sides of the gun control debate, with supporters saying it’s dangerous and Second Amendment supporters saying it’s not good enough.
At a committee hearing last month, the GOA argued that the open carry restriction violated its “constitutionally God-given right to self-defense.”
Brannan explained that the bill’s purpose is “to allow Floridians to carry secret[weapons]without the bureaucracy and government costs…that’s what it really is.” bottom. When pressed to add an open-carry provision, he added that the bill was “as it was presented,” according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Valdes discourages Brannan’s apparent reluctance to amend his proposal, calling the lack of action on the amendment in the Senate hypocritical for the Republican Party.
“The overwhelming majority of Republicans have refused to advance a true constitutional carry law, despite promises by the governor to give Florida voters just that, and that is what citizens demand. is that“ Valdes said in a prepared statement.A genuine constitutional carry law allows law-abiding Florida residents and guests to legally conceal and open firearms without a government permit. ”
Last year, DeSantis said he intended to sign the permit-free carry bill before stepping down. Thursday was at least the second time he publicly said he would sign the open-carry bill. But last August, he explained, “Congress needs to get it to my desk.”
HB 543 has cleared all committee suspensions and is awaiting discussion in the House of Commons.
Opponents say the proposal is short-sighted and manipulating people’s lives to further their political ambitions.
“This bill does not represent the values of Floridians. The world knows this is not normal. It is not normal thinking,” said Sarah Puckett, president of March for Our Lives He spoke of easing gun laws in the wake of a series of mass shootings across the country.
The 2023 session of the Florida Legislature begins on Tuesday, March 7.
