Dog burns after surviving fire in Broward, now subject of ‘sloppy’ children’s book

wilton manors, florida – Scruffy was severely burned as a puppy in Broward County.

Attorney Randy Katz took a 5-year-old dog and turned it into the subject of an award-winning children’s book.

“He was taken to the fire station and left for dead. His back was completely burned. My heart just fell for him,” Katz said.

The Pompano Beach firefighters were initially unsure if Scruffy would survive. He underwent emergency surgery.

“It’s been hard, it’s been challenging, but he’s been so sweet and incredible. He’s been through a lot, so it takes a lot of patience,” Katz said. I spent a lot of time with him…I bonded with him.”

Katz said he and Scruffy have become inseparable. They even share a love for music and coffee shops.

“It took a lot of time to get him to a great place where he’s comfortable with people, but he’s great now. He’s a really inspirational and amazing dog. He has 2 I’m given a second chance, and I’m so glad he saved me, as well,” Katz said.

Scruffy became a local celebrity and Katz’s book was a hit at Wilton Manors. The duo also make appearances and reading events at local schools.

“This book is really about second chances,” Katz said. “It’s about overcoming obstacles, that the past isn’t the same as the future, that if you have love and a loving home, magical things can happen.”

Edwin Camakaro illustrated the book. They have won the Moonbeam Award for Children’s Literature, the Independent Book Award First Place Medal, and the Royal Dragonfly Book Award Medal.
