Eastchester Fire: Truck explodes in Bronx, burning nearby cars

Eastchester, The Bronx (WABC) — A truck loaded with propane and epoxy caught fire in the Bronx, and the flames were so intense that some subway services were disrupted.

The fire started around 6:00 a.m. between Wright and Conner streets on Dyre Avenue.

A newscopter 7 was above the Eastchester site, showing a charred truck. A video on the Citizen app showed the fire spreading to several parked cars.

FDNY sprayed several surrounding buildings and vehicles with water to prevent the fire, which was extinguished by 6:30 a.m.

“We are on an all-hands mission of about 60 firefighters and paramedics and we have a total of four hoselines, which is very unique, one of the hoselines happens to be a foam hoseline. So we use it for flammable liquids because it’s an epoxy resin, and it was a very unique fire because it happens so infrequently,” said FDNY Deputy Director Ken Scanlon.

Fire officials said they believed the fire may have been caused by a mechanical problem with the truck, but the exact cause has not yet been determined.

The box truck is owned by Statewide Striping Corporation, a pavement marking installation company based in Parsippany, New Jersey. Statewide Striping Corporation partner Bob Wilson said the truck was on its way to “work,” but didn’t give details.

The statewide Striping Company said in a statement: “Thankfully the fire department responded quickly. The driver was fine and no one was injured.”

Line 5 service was scheduled to stop Wednesday morning between East 180th Street and Eastchester Dyer Avenue, but subway service resumed with minor delays about an hour later.
