El Paso shooting: 1 dead, 3 hospitalized as Cielo Vista mall rampage. 1 person in custody
El Paso, TX — Police in El Paso, Texas, said one person was killed and three others injured in a shooting at a mall on Wednesday.
One, an El Paso Police spokesperson, Sergeant, was taken into custody. Robert Gomez said. No immediate information about the person was provided.
Another person may have been involved, Gomez said, and police were looking for them.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, Gomez said, but was unable to provide further information about it.
“It’s too early to speculate on motives,” Gomez said.
Gomez said the three injured were hospitalized. Their condition was unknown.
Gomez said police believed the scene was safe and officers were cleaning the entire mall to make sure.
“This is a big scene,” Gomez said. “It will take some time to clear the mall.”
Authorities have set up a reintegration center at a nearby high school.
Police have previously said shootings were reported at the mall’s food court.
The shooting at Cielo Vista Mall on Wednesday occurred across a busy shopping area and a large Walmart parking lot where 23 people were killed in a racist attack in 2019.
The United States has seen dozens of mass shootings so far in 2023, most recently at Michigan State University on Monday, when three students were killed and five others injured. In January, 11 people died in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, as they tried to celebrate the Lunar New Year at a dance hall popular with older Asian-Americans.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there will be more than 600 mass shootings in the United States in 2022, killing or injuring at least four people.
