‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Dominates SAG Awards
The unlikely awards-season juggernaut, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Screen Actors Guild Award On Sunday, the stream gathered awards for best ensemble, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Hui Kuan, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis.
Often an Oscar preview, the SAG Awards threw a few curveballs into the Oscar race in a streamed ceremony Netflix’s YouTube page From the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Curtis won the Best Female Supporting Actor Award for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, holding down her favorite Angela Bassett. Brendan Fraser wins Best Male Lead Actor for “The Whale.”
Expected to be the first actor to win an Oscar for a Marvel movie (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Bassett was the clear frontrunner in the category for weeks, if not months. But Curtis, who was nominated for her first SAG Award, was the surprise winner at Sunday’s ceremony. He said he was wearing a ring.
“I know you look at me and think ‘Nepobaby,'” said Curtis. “But the truth of the matter is, I’m his 64, which is amazing.”
Best Picture won both awards the week before the SAG Awards. Producer and Director Guild, two of the most predictive awards ahead of the Oscars. In SAG, Yeoh won best female lead.

Sunday’s SAG Awards clarified the Best Actress award. The best actors are some of the hardest to call. Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Colin Farrell (“Inisherin’s Banshee”) were all considered potential winners, but the comeback won his SAG Award for his performance. was Fraser.
“Trust me, just stay there, put one foot forward and you’ll get where you need to be,” Fraser said.
“Abbott Elementary”‘s Quinta Branson and Janelle James kicked off the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards with an opening joke. Among them was one that suggested recent Grammy winner Viola Davis had moved beyond her EGOT status to “SheEGOTallofthem.”
Branson later returned to the stage with the cast of “Abbott Elementary,” winning the SAG Award for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Branson, one of her sitcom creators and producers, says of her castmates, “These people bring me back to earth.”
“White Lotus” also took the victory lap, clinching best ensemble in a drama series and scoring another win for Jennifer Coolidge from her Emmy and Golden Globe wins. I traced my love for acting to a trip in grade 1 to see a Charlie Chaplin movie. She then thanked her longtime friend, actor Tim Bagley.
“It’s a great date tonight,” said Coolidge. “I can’t wait until I get home.”
The ceremony’s first award went to last year’s winner, Jessica Chastain. Netflix signed on to stream the ceremony after the SAG Awards, presented by the film and television acting guild SAG-AFRTA, lost their airing on TNT/TBS.
Sunday’s live stream meant a slightly scaled-down atmosphere. Without airtime limits, the winners would not have played off. The dignified and unpretentious Sam Elliott, the winner of the Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series of “1883,” spoke well past his allotted time. But the show picked up a string of early winners, including Jean Smart (“Hucks”), Jeremy Allen White (“Bear”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”).
Another streaming effect: no bleep.
