jacksonville, florida – The SWAT standoff, which began early Thursday morning, ended around 10 a.m. when a man turned himself in to police at the Gregory Cove housing complex in Arlington’s Charterpoint neighborhood.
A witness from the apartment complex sent a video to News4JAX that shows a man in a white T-shirt kneeling with his arms raised as a K-9 from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department lunges at him, grappling him to the ground. I could see him lying down.
The video was filmed from a distance, and the interaction between the man and the police officer is inaudible.
Officers initially responded to the facility after receiving reports of a shooting incident around 3 a.m.
Residents told News4JAX they were trying to rescue two people from their apartment while officers responded to the shootings. A SWAT police officer then appeared in the facility. It is not clear if the shootings and the SWAT confrontation are related.
Approximately seven hours later, video showed the man surrendering to the JSO, including a takedown by K-9, after which a stretcher was brought in for him.
Some residents said police had told them to evacuate their apartments as the standoff continued. The sheriff’s office later posted an update on social media, announcing that Edenfield Road, the address of the Gregory Cove complex, was closed to vehicles and pedestrians.
The post called on residents living far away from Edenfield Road to stay home or where they are, as University Boulevard will be inaccessible until police operations are over.
