How to help victims of Brazil’s catastrophic flooding

The South Florida community has rallied together to aid thousands of individuals in Brazil who are grappling with devastating flooding. Families and organizations are mobilizing efforts to gather donations and support relief initiatives.

Over the past two weeks, severe flooding has wreaked havoc in southern Brazil, particularly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where streets have transformed into waterways. The impact has been catastrophic, with nearly 150 reported fatalities, many more missing, and over half a million people displaced from their homes.

Juan Rodriguez, whose family is among the affected, shared harrowing accounts of their ordeal. He recounted how one family member endured being stranded on a rooftop for two days, praying for rescue amidst the rising waters. Despite losing everything, Rodriguez feels blessed that his family has survived together and is now calling upon the South Florida community for support.

In response, Global Empowerment Mission Latin America has deployed teams on the ground to provide vital assistance. Luis Velasquez, who has been in Brazil with the organization for 11 days, is distributing essential supplies such as water and food to families who have been displaced and left without basic necessities.

The Consulate General of Brazil in Miami is also actively involved, collaborating with key collection points in the U.S. to gather donations for Brazil. Their efforts aim to provide immediate relief and support to those impacted by the flooding.
