Indonesia’s Merapi volcano spews hot clouds in new eruption

Mount Merapi – Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted on Saturday, creating a scorching gas cloud and an avalanche of lava, forcing authorities to suspend tourism and mining activity on the slopes of the country’s most active volcano.

On the densely populated Java island of Mount Merapi, clouds of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas erupted and traveled up to 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) on its slopes. Abdul Muharri, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency, said a column of hot clouds rose 100 meters (yards) into the air.

The eruption blocked the sun for an entire day and covered several villages with ash fall. No casualties were reported.

It was Merapi’s largest lava flow since authorities raised the alert level to its maximum. Second highest in November 2020, Hanik Humaida, Director of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Yogyakarta, said:

She said residents living on Merapi’s slopes are advised to stay 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the crater and be aware of the hazards from lava.

Tourism and mining activities have stopped.

The 2,968-meter (9,737-foot) mountain lies about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Yogyakarta, the ancient center of Javanese culture and home to dynasties for centuries. About 250,000 people live within 10 kilometers (6 miles) of the volcano.

Mount Merapi is the most active of Indonesia’s more than 120 active volcanoes, having recently repeatedly erupted lava and gas clouds. The last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people and displaced 20,000 villagers.

Indonesia, an island nation of 270 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity because it lies along the “Ring of Fire”, a series of horseshoe-shaped seismic faults that encircle the Pacific Ocean.

In December 2021, Java’s highest volcano, Mount Semeru, erupted, killing 48 people and leaving 36 missing.
