Over 80% of wine producers are men, but two women are entering the vineyard and business.
It’s a whirlwind time for Jessica Hershfield and Kaitlyn Law. Their wine label, Just Enough Wines, is starting to make headlines in a highly competitive industry. This is a huge achievement considering they are one of the masses who have pivoted to new careers during the pandemic.
“The pandemic has made us really appreciate what’s important in life,” Hershfield said.
Hershfield has worked for some of the biggest companies in the tech industry, including Google and Uber.
“I was always itching to start my own thing. I wanted to find something I was passionate about,” she said.
Hershfield then joined forces with Law to form Just Enough Wines.
“I think taking the leap and starting your own company is probably the scariest thing anyone can do.”
“Early on, we made a point of partnering with industry experts,” says Lo.
We then considered how brands could help solve a problem many people had during the pandemic. It’s portion control.
“I opened a bottle and after a few days it was either going bad and wasting or I was drinking too much, so I wanted this built-in portion control, so the can is a glass and a half. It gives the perfect pour,” said Hershfield.
“It gave us an angle where we could really establish ourselves,” said Lo.
Both women had to learn the business from scratch: growing, harvesting, crushing, pressing, fermenting and aging. I felt overwhelmed. Hershfield advanced her one step, one grape at a time.
“If you don’t just apply to the company, but just do one thing each day, slowly over time these things add up and you start to build momentum,” Hershfield says.
Their wines are in Total Wine and in some supermarkets. Their goal is to be the best-selling canned wine in the United States.
“Changing careers for me was the best decision I ever made,” Hershfield said.
Each can retails for $6 to $12. Just Enough Wines is looking to expand its wholesale presence this year with the addition of new states such as Florida, Colorado, Texas and Illinois.
