Lionel Messi Announces Inter Miami as His Final Club

At 36 years old, the World Cup champion has no plans of joining an Argentine club to conclude his illustrious playing career.

“I believe Inter Miami will be my last club. Today, I feel it will be my final club,” stated the Argentina captain in an interview with ESPN.

Messi is currently preparing with his national team for the Copa América in the United States, where Argentina defends their championship title.

The former Barcelona star, having achieved everything in the sport, fulfilled a significant career goal by leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

With a record eight Ballon d’Or awards to his name, Messi departed European football last year to join the MLS club.

His contract with Inter Miami is due to expire at the conclusion of the 2025 season.

“It was a challenging decision to leave Europe and come here,” Messi admitted. “Becoming a world champion made it easier and provided a new perspective. However, I’m not dwelling on that. I’m focused on enjoying every moment. That’s why I appreciate everything much more, knowing that there’s less time left and I’m having a great time.”

Many Argentine fans had hoped Messi would finish his career at Newell’s Old Boys, the club where he began his football journey in his hometown of Rosario.

Messi emphasized that he is savoring the final stages of his career to the fullest.

“I’m enjoying my time at the club, fortunate to have teammates and friends like Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, all former Barcelona players,” he shared. “I’ve also had wonderful experiences with the national team, where I’ve made lifelong friends.”

“I cherish the little details, knowing I’ll miss them when I stop playing,” he continued. “Football has been my life. I love playing and training, the daily routine, and match days. Yet, there’s always a fear that it will all come to an end.”
