Official: Fire at Mexican immigration center near US border kills 39
Mexico City – More than 30 migrants died in a fire at a migrant detention center in northern Mexico near the US border, officials said Tuesday.
Images from the scene showed rows of bodies lying under shimmering silver sheets outside the Ciudad Juarez facility across from El Paso, Texas. Ambulances, firefighters and vans from the morgue were also seen.
A fire that broke out late Monday killed 39 people and injured 29, said an official at the National Institute for Migration, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak publicly about the incident.
Ciudad Juarez is a major crossroads for immigrants entering the United States. Its shelters are filled with immigrants awaiting an opportunity to cross the border or have applied for asylum in the United States and are awaiting the process.
According to media reports, Mexico’s attorney general’s office has launched an investigation and has investigators on the scene.
