Driver detained in pedestrian fatality

Gramercy Park, Manhattan (WABC) — A 26-year-old driver was detained Monday after running into a crowd in Manhattan, killing a pedestrian and hospitalizing three others.

Police said the driver may have been trying to avoid the cyclist when the crash occurred on 21st and 3rd Avenues before 8 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators are investigating whether alcohol may have been involved.

Witnesses said the sound of the northbound Hyundai Sonata turning and crashing into the kiosk “was like a grenade exploding.”

A 23-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

A 26-year-old female pedestrian is hospitalized in serious condition, and a 21-year-old pedestrian is in stable condition.

The 18-year-old male cyclist who was rear-ended and the 25-year-old female passenger in the Hyundai vehicle were also in stable condition as of Monday morning.

The accident happened next to the former NYPD Police Academy, which the city has been using to house asylum seekers.

Investigators are investigating whether immigrants were among the victims.
