Planned lawsuit against Hawaiian Airlines over turbulent flight

Honolulu (KHON2) — At least 12 passengers plan to file a lawsuit against Hawaiian Airlines over a flight hit by severe turbulence that injured dozens.

Lawyers question whether the pilot and co-pilot took the necessary precautions to avoid injury.

On December 18, 2022, Hawaiian Airlines Flight 35 from Phoenix experienced severe turbulence 40 minutes after landing in Honolulu, causing passengers to lift from their seats. Twenty people were taken to hospital, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.

A lawyer representing the 12 injured passengers said the captain knew he was about to experience severe turbulence and should have ordered all passengers and crew to sit down and fasten their belts. .

According to preliminary NTSB reports, the captain saw clouds rising towards the aircraft in seconds and did not have time to deviate.

Hussein said further investigations are underway before filing a lawsuit. A Hawaiian Airlines spokeswoman said she could not comment because the NTSB investigation was ongoing.
