Residents evacuated as fire breaks out at Crown Heights apartment

Crown Heights, Brooklyn (WABC) — A rapid fire in a Brooklyn apartment forced some residents to evacuate this Memorial Day weekend.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, flames rose from a fifth-floor window in a building at 1281 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights.
Firefighters smashed windows in a series of apartments, including Tiffany Smith’s, letting smoke out.
“I feel really overwhelmed,” Smith said after seeing a fire next door and a large portion of her apartment destroyed when she got home.
Firefighters were able to put the fire under control within an hour and prevent the worst damage to the apartment where the fire broke out.
But like Smith, some residents now have to deal with the aftermath.
“They came in next door. They broke through the windows of the house and destroyed everything,” she said.
Symptoms subsided within 30 minutes, but the damage caused Smith’s headaches to last much longer.
“It’s terrible. I’m confused. Now I have to figure out what’s going to happen next,” Smith added.
The firefighters finished their work in a hurry and left before the Red Cross arrived, but the firefighters will support Smith and his family until they get back on their feet.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
