New Astronomical Discovery: Double-faced Stars Contain Elements of Hydrogen and Helium

Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 7:18 p.m.

Newly discovered 'double-faced' star has helium on one side and hydrogen on the other

Astronomers have discovered so-called “two-faced” stars, which are composed almost entirely of hydrogen on one side and helium on the other.

It is the first of its kind among white dwarfs.

It was first discovered by a sky-scanning instrument at the Caltech Palomar Observatory near San Diego.

Observations of the two sides were then made at the WM Keck Observatory atop Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii.

The star is nicknamed “Janus” after the Roman two-faced god of transition.

It is more than 1,300 light-years from Earth and rotates around its axis every 15 minutes.
