USS Orleck relocates to shipyard west home

jacksonville, florida – The USS Orek, which has been docked outside of downtown Hyatt Regency for more than a year, will finally move to its permanent home near Bay Street on Monday after several delays.

The warship was converted into a museum and moved from Texas to Jacksonville at a cost of just over $2 million.

When Ourek first arrived in Jacksonville, in March 2022, she had to dock at a makeshift house in front of the Hyatt Regency.

But the warship was never meant to be docked in front of the Hyatt.The city and the Downtown Investment Authority have been working to prepare the infrastructure for docking the ship in the Museum District, also known as the Museum District. That move is set to finally take place at 9:30 am on Monday, after the ship’s initial attempt to move to its permanent location on Wednesday was delayed by tides.

The Jacksonville Fire Museum has already made its way into the Museum District along Bay Street. Last March, the crew used large carts to haul the entire building from its old site across from TIAA Bankfield.

This entire area is part of the city’s larger plan to revamp the look of Jacksonville.

Last month, the Downtown Investment Authority met to review preliminary designs for spaces in the district. Currently, these plans call for a food hall, boardwalk, green space, and other additions along Bay Street.

The city council has approved a 40-year lease plan for a new facility that houses the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) in the area.

Also worth visiting is the pier of the USS Orleck, the most decorated post-WWII ship that fought in the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War eras.

Another potential change concerns the location of the former Jacksonville Landing.Developers want to add $Two million speakers and video systems at Riverfront Plaza Project a film or video on the side of a performing arts center.

There are also plans to build a new Four Seasons Hotel near Jaguars Stadium.
