West Virginia woman arrested in Memorial Day crash that killed her
A 27-year-old Cocoa man was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicle murder. This was seven months after his passenger died in a motorcycle accident on Memorial Day.
According to the arrest affidavit, Tyler Zimmerman was driving a blue 2010 Harley-Davison Super Glide motorcycle with New Jersey tags on May 30 when he was killed by Kristen Zimmerman of West Virginia. Ann Keef, 29, was on board as a passenger.
Shortly before 4:25 p.m., Zimmerman rear-ended a silver 2001 Pontiac Gran AM GT driven by Cocoa’s Vernon T. Pierce near the intersection of Riveredge Drive and South Washington Avenue, the affidavit said. I’m here. Pierce, 62, was unharmed.
When police arrived at the scene, Zimmerman had a “unique alcoholic odor” and had no memory of Pinpoint’s students and his own passengers, thus establishing a probable cause of his impaired driving, the affidavit said. He got a warrant for a blood sample. Holmes Regional Medical Center also received Zimmerman’s medical records and blood warrant.
Records show Zimmerman had told hospital staff he used alcohol early on Memorial Day, the affidavit said. His blood alcohol level from the sample taken was 122.4, about 1.53 times the legal limit of 80 milligrams, or 0.08 grams per 100 milliliters.
Police used data from the Police Institute of Technical Management to calculate the motorcycle’s minimum and maximum speed falls and determine the motorcycle’s speed at the time of the crash, the affidavit said. Their calculations ranged from 41.89 to 49.56 mph. They also calculated the motorcycle’s speed prior to impact and found the range to be approximately 54.75 to 58.40 miles per hour.
They calculated the Pontiac’s speed at the time of the crash to be about 46.48 miles per hour, the affidavit says.
Keef was pronounced dead at an unspecified local hospital, according to a statement released by police after the crash. Zimmermann was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening to him.
He was held Thursday night at the Brevard County Jail on $35,000 bail.
