Winter shelters open for two nights in a row as Brevard sees temperatures near freezing
Brevard County officials said temperatures were expected to drop into the low 30s across most of the Space Coast on Saturday night, with winter shelters set to open for two nights in a row.
Shelters in Titusville, Cocoa and Melbourne opened Friday night, according to Melbourne’s National Weather Service. The temperature had dropped to 49 degrees for him and there were 35 mph gusts of wind.
Melbourne’s NWS meteorologist Robert Haley said the same shelter was due to open on Saturday, but temperatures are expected to only soar to the mid-50s across Brevard before plummeting back to the low-30s. It was done. Coastal areas weren’t expected to be that cold, but they could still see temperatures in the mid-30s, he said.
Gusts of 35 mph were expected in the county, and sustained winds from the northwest were expected to reach 10 to 25 mph. Saturday was a breezy day, but the winds will be milder than Friday night, Haley said.
“It’s going to be colder than last night, but it’s going to be less windy, so the wind chill will be… just a few degrees cooler than the actual temperature,” he said. Yes, Melbourne got 0.33 inches of rain, bringing cooler temperatures over the weekend.
Sunday was expected to be warm during the day, with temperatures in the low 60s, but it returned to frigid conditions at night. The drop to cooler temperatures is due to high-pressure systems set to settle in Brevard and other areas of central Florida.
“[It]will bring us a really mild breeze, which will bring us even more chill,” Haley said.
The cold weather was expected to continue into Monday morning, but temperatures could drop to the mid-30s and hit the high 30s in coastal areas. This area of high pressure will also help keep the Space Coast dry over the weekend, Haley said.
No freeze warnings had been issued as of noon Saturday, but the NWS website said it was “not out of the realm of possibility”.
Refuges from the weather on Saturday night were available at Lifepoint Ministries in Titusville, Central Brevard Sharing Center in Cocoa and The Daily Bread in Melbourne.
