Online Casinos in Florida: Where Do Things Stand In Terms of Ongoing Legislation?

Some weeks ago, online gambling, both in terms of casino and sports betting, was made legal in the state of Florida; however, that doesn’t mean that you can do either quite yet, and that’s due to a great deal of opposition on a political level.

Currently, the issue is at the federal appeals court level, where an agreement between the Seminole Tribe and the State of Florida is being blocked. This means online gambling is shut for now but could be resolved in a matter of weeks.

This would mean that access to great online casinos, such as at the BlackLotus online casino, in Florida could happen soon enough. Things are very fluid in the state where the Hard Rock Casino’s betting app was live on November 1st, when regulation was successfully passed, only to shut down a month later.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis had successfully reached an agreement with the Seminole tribe earlier this year in a deal that would have seen the state receive as much as $20 billion in projected revenue over a period of 30 years.

It’s clear that Florida would prove to be a very successful market for both online casino and sports betting markets, and as such, it’s no surprise that many are pushing for any appeals to the agreed legislation to be overturned.

Florida already plays host to 11 brick and mortar casinos, which house as many as 27,000 slot and gaming machines. In the age of COVID, it may be a far more preferable option for many who enjoy the use of physical casinos to opt instead to have the same gaming options from their desktop or mobile devices.

There is a sense that slowly but online gaming will be accepted across the US, but currently, it’s happening on a state-by-state basis, which is causing some rather interesting patterns of behavior.

For example, New York is moving closer to allowing online gaming, and that is fueled by the fact that many who live in the state are traveling over state lines to nearby states where it is legal. This means that the state is losing priceless tax revenue and seeing it go elsewhere, and it may be the financial element that outdoes any morality issues that are in play.

Right now, in a number of states, this is almost a moot point as it’s very rare for anyone to be prosecuted for using online casino sites in states where it isn’t legal. So many would just use a VPN to access a market elsewhere, and in this way, technology may lead to a more united approach where the whole country simply allows consenting adults to use online casinos and sportsbook sites as they wish.

This is, after all, how the market works in most other countries where regulated casinos are accessible to the entire population of a country rather than specific territories offering different boundaries to doing so.
